The following gallery represents the beginning of my turnings. Hundreds were made, Lots of frogs, a few keepers. Lots were given away. Some were burned. Learning was made much easier through my membership in the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). The piece above was really fun to make.

The convention is to name the wood and size. Where I know the name of the wood, I will list it along with the size. If not, I will list what I know. The piece above is made from WOOD.

Redwood bowl with mahogany. insert and lid. 3 1/2" high.

My first attempt at making multiple identical parts. Very successful. Purple Heart and maple top, coaster set.

Two neat pieces. Glass is 5" high. I do not know the type of wood used in the glass but the bowl is cherry, from a tree that was in a friends fathers back yard.

This is a branch from the walnut tree used for my headboard. It was almost perfectly round. The white wood (cambium) is not glued to the brown wood (heart wood). 8" diam

Natural edge cherry bowl. 11" high. At the time I made this, it was the finest piece that I had made. I love it! (9/08- Still do)

Maple bowl. Made in class with Stewart Batty.

Early attempt at lamination. Not the first. 4 pieces of walnut with segmented maple band. I used 2 rounds to cut the four pieces. It was fun to make.

The small piece sits on Fiona's desk at the lake. The top is maple about 1/16" thick. The bottom is walnut.

Trunk of a Juniper tree that was cut down to make room for a parking lot. I made 3 pieces from this. Two have been given away.

Rescued from the wood pile. Turned on my old 12" delta. The lathe was walking across the floor from the imbalance. Ignorance is bliss. After this I bolted the lathe to the floor.

Burl candlestick. We use this every Christmas as a centerpiece for our table. Fiona loves it...

The concept was to move the base out from the bottom of the bowl and make legs. This maple piece is about 8" square.

I started with a square block. As I was rounding it off the idea came to me to leave the top square. This is the result. Later on I made a 5 sided block and the star was coming out great. Then I blew it up. Oh well!

Walnut 14" high hollow form. There was a sign nailed to the tree. The dark streak is from the nails discoloring the wood. you can see the 4 nail holes in the piece.

Cherry, Green paint. 12" diam. We used this as a salad bowl for a few months until I made a larger maple bowl. This now sits on a shelf.
18 / 20
Spalted beech bowl and cover from same piece of wood. 9" diam.

Zircote, 3" high This wood was brought home from Belize by Fiona after a diving trip. I still have some left. Waiting until my skill level warrants cutting it.

This was a piece of log that I split and got 2 pieces It came to a point on one side. The execution was not the best because the lathe wouldn't hold still, even though it was bolted down.
