This folder is all about natural patterns. Fiona and I spent three weeks in New Zealand during November 2010. I spent some of that time taking photos of trees and their bark. While I can't name the trees, I found the textures and colors of the bark fascinating. What follows is a selection of photos. My camera is capable of taking extreme close ups so it is difficult to judge the scale of some of the photos.

The first set of photos was taken in the town of Russel, which is on the Bay of Islands on the east coast of the North Island. I have no idea where the two photos above were taken.

This branch didn't have an end. I thought it was a bent branch but it seemed to grow out of both places.

The next two sets of photos is of an orchid growing on a tree, duh. The closer I looked the more detail I saw. I took a dozen photos and could have taken dozens more. The web doesn't do the photos justice. The fine detail was like a fractal, the closer I got the deeper it went. If you look at the first photo you can see the leaf on the right.

These three photos are also of the orchid. The area covered in each photo is no more than a 2" square.

This set of photos is of a Kauri Tree. The Kauri is native to NZ and is among the largest trees, along with the Redwood. The old growth forest had trees as large as 25' diameter.

No big deal, This is just a pile of pilings in a boat yard in Christchurch.

This is the lodge we stayed in while we were in Russel. The following photo is a close up of the trunk. I know that all palm trees, or orchards, have similar details the world over. Being on vacation and taking the time to actually "see" the details of your surroundings makes everything seem new and exciting.

This to is a palm tree. While the photos at the right were from a distance, these are close ups.

This was the MOST amazing tree. The curlicues were endless.

I can't remember why I took these two photos or the one at the right. I'm sure if I go to Central Park and take the time I will find trees with bark just as interesting. The thing about the trees in NZ is that I haven't seen them before.

This is technically not bark. We came across this rotting tree in a field. There is a place in Central Park called The Rambles, where it is the policy not to remove dead trees or brush. Traveling around NZ it sometimes appeared that this was a national policy. There were dead trees lying in fields and along the roads.

Another set of photos that could have been taken in NY.
